Census of Population and Housing - 2001 Census Products

Australia's 14th Census of Population and Housing was conducted on Tuesday the 7th August 2001.
Data from the 2001 Census is available for free from the ABS website - see link below.
The products and reference information released from the 2001 Census include:

QuickStats is a summary of key Census data relating to persons, families and dwellings and also contains a small textual description of the statistics contained within the tables. QuickStats is not inclusive of all Census topics, instead providing a selection of general topics and data about a chosen area.

Census Tables
The Census Tables product is designed for clients who are interested in either data on a particular geographic area, or data on a specific topic. Each of the available tables contain key Census characteristics of persons, families and dwellings, covering most topics on the Census form.

Community Profiles
The Community Profile Series contains six separate profiles aimed at providing key Census characteristics relating to persons, families and dwellings and covering most topics on the Census form. The profiles are excellent tools for researching, planning and analysing small and large geographic areas. They enable comparisons to be made between different geographic areas.

Census Publications
A range of selected characteristics from the 2001 Census, available for Australia and each State and Territory. Publications include the Social Atlas Series, Selected Social and Housing Characteristics and Selected Education and Labour Force Characteristics.

2001 Census Dictionary
This publication provides users of census data with a comprehensive reference document for the Census of Population and Housing. The dictionary contains the details of the classifications used in the 2001 Census along with definitions of census concepts and terms.

Census Working Papers
A series of working papers were produced to assess and report on various aspects of the 2001 Census, particularly data quality. Several census topics were examined in detail and the impact of form design, collection procedures and data processing on data quality will be evaluated.

CData 2001
Developed jointly by the Australian Bureau of Statistics and MapInfo Australia, CDATA 2001 is a powerful desktop software package that allows users to analyse and display comprehensive 2001 Census data in detailed maps, graphs and reports. This product is no longer sold or supported by the ABS.

CProfile 2001
CProfile software is provided to assist clients in their use of Census Community Profile data in electronic format. CProfile allows users to manipulate, print and export data.
The MapStats product is designed to provide users with quick and easy access to thematically mapped Census statistics. The maps will be available for larger geographies and will depict selected population, ethnicity, education, family, income, labour force and dwelling characteristics.

2001 Classification Counts
Frequency counts for all categories within Census classifications. Available for States and Territories and Capital Cities.

Socio-Economic Indexes for Areas SEIFA 2001
SEIFA 2001 allows users to investigate the socio-economic well-being of Australian communities and identify areas of advantage and disadvantage. SEIFA 2001 summarises information from the 2001 Census into four separate indexes that each concentrate on a different aspect of the social and economic conditions in an area.

Australian Census Analytic Program (ACAP)
The Australian Census Analytic Program is a collaborative venture between the ABS and some of Australia's foremost academics and social researchers.

2001 Household Sample File (HSF)
The HSF is a comprehensive Confidentialised Unit Record File (CURF) of census characteristics, containing a one percent random sample of private households and associated persons, and a one percent random sample of persons in non-private dwellings.

Census Fact Sheets
Census Fact Sheets are a quick reference product, one to two pages long, designed to assist in the use and interpretation of Census data. They provide a summary of conceptual and data issues, and any changes that have occurred since the last Census.

2001 Census Household form
This document contains an exact replication of the Household Form from the 2001 Census of Population and Housing.

Census Basics
A CD-ROM product containing 2001 Census Basic Community Profile (BCP) data, down to Collection District (CD) level, and digital boundaries in mid/mif format. Census Basics is available for purchase for all of Australia or for individual States and Territories. This product is no longer sold or supported by the ABS.
