Community Profile Series
Product Description
Community Profiles format the detailed Census data for small areas into sets of tables containing key Census characteristics of persons, families and dwellings covering most topics on the Census Form. The profile series is available for all standard Census geographic areas from Collection District (CD) to total Australia. Explanatory notes and footnotes are included with each Community Profile.
For the 2001 Census, all Community Profiles will available via the ABS Web Site, accessible as free and charged components.
A range of Basic Community Profiles (BCPs) will be released as the primary free Census data component on the ABS Web Site and available to Statistical Local Area (SLA) geographic level for free. The free component of the Indigenous Profile will be at the Australia, State/ Territory and ATSIC Region geographic levels.
All Community Profiles will be available as .xls files via the ABS Web Site and area selections for these products will be simplified through an intuitive, drill-down map interface. They will be available in 2 releases. First release tables from the BCP and the Indigenous Profile will be available from launch day, June 17, 2002.
The 2001 Community Profile series comprises six profiles as listed below:
Basic Community Profile
The Basic Community Profile (BCP) contains 33 tables that provide key Census characteristics of persons, families and dwellings. This Profile is available for the following geographic levels: Collection District (CD), Statistical Local Area (SLA), Local Government Area (LGA), Commonwealth Electoral Division (CED), State Electoral Division (SED), Urban Centre / Locality (UC/L), Statistical Subdivision (SSD), Statistical Division (SD), Statistical District (S Dist), Postal Area, Suburb, Section of State, State and Australia. It is based on place of enumeration.
The 2001 BCP will be released in two phases. First release processing tables (Tables B01 - B21) are those tables containing variables which are easy to process. Second release processing tables (Tables B22 - B33) contain variables which require more complex processing.
Indigenous Profile
The Indigenous Profile contains 29 tables that provide key Census characteristics of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons, families and dwellings. Some tables provide comparisons with the non-Indigenous population. All tables within this profile are available for the following geographic levels: ATSIC Region, LGA, SSD, SD, SDi, State and Australia. Tables I01, I02, I03 and I13 only will be available at SLA, Indigenous Location and Indigenous Area. It is based on place of enumeration.
The 2001 Indigenous Profile will be released in two phases. First release processing tables (Tables I01 - I12) are those tables containing variables which are easy to process. Second release processing tables (Tables I13 - I29) contain variables which require more complex processing.
Time Series Profile
The Time Series Profile contains 22 tables comparing data from the 1991, 1996 and 2001 Censuses where the classifications are comparable, and is based on 2001 SLA boundaries. This Profile is available for the following geographic levels: SLA, LGA, SSD, SD, S Dist, State and Australia. In the Time Series Profile some classifications have been redefined to obtain data comparability between Censuses. Footnotes have been added to the tables wherever possible to indicate these concordances.
Usual Residents Profile
The Usual Residents Profile contains 28 tables based on SLA of usual residence, and differs from the other Census Community Profiles in that it provides data based on where people 'usually' live or their 'usual address' rather than where they were counted on Census night. This Profile is available for the following geographic levels: SLA, LGA, SSD, SD, S Dist, Postcode, State and Australia.
Expanded Community Profile
The Expanded Community Profile contains 49 tables. It is the most detailed Community Profile in the series, comprising more detailed versions of some of the BCP tables, plus new tables. This profile is available for the following geographic levels: SLA, LGA, SSD, SD, S Dist, State and Australia.
Working Population Profile
The Working Population Profile contains 19 tables that provide characteristics of employed persons for each SLA. This Profile is available for the following geographic levels: Journey to Work Study Areas, SLA, LGA, SSD, SD, S Dist, State and Australia.
Community Profile Consultancies
Any of the above profile can be produced for an aggregate of standard geographic areas for which the particular profile is available. For example, the Expanded Community Profile could be produced for an aggregate of six SLAs as a consultancy. Usual Residents data is also available down to CD level as a consultancy service.
Output Format
Available electronically and in hardcopy.
All Profile delivered electronically will be accompanied by standard ABS software to manipulate, view, print and export the data, free of charge. This software, called CProfile2001, will be provided in Windows format and will provide the following functionality:

Classification Counts
Census of Population and Housing: Classification Counts, Australia (cat. no. 2022.0)
Product Description
The 2001 Classification Counts provide frequency counts for 2001 Census variables in full classificatory detail, available for each State and Territory and Capital City Statistical Division. These are cross-classified by sex where applicable. Classification Counts have been released in two phases. First release are those variables which are relatively easy to process, such as age, birthplace, language, dwelling type, rent and housing loan repayment. Second release are those variables which require more complex processing such as industry of employment, labour force status, and non-school qualification.
Output format
Classification Counts are available through the ABS web site in Excel format.

Product Description
Census Basics is a CD-ROM product containing 2001 Census Basic Community Profile (BCP) data, down to Collection District (CD) level, and digital boundaries in generic formats. Census Basics is available for purchase for all of Australia or for individual States and Territories.
This product has been introduced for the 2001 Census for several purposes:
- for use with existing database or analysis systems (e.g. geographic information systems, other mapping or tabulation software) where the sophisticated functionality provided by CDATA is not required;

- for use as a simple viewing tool to display a formatted BCP for a single geographic area; for users who do not require manipulation or other functionality;
|
- for pre-release purchasers of CDATA2001 who require access to the available data before CDATA2001 software is released. Census Basics will be provided free on request to those who have either pre-paid or signed an undertaking to purchase CDATA2001. Pre-purchasers can use the data with existing software, including MapInfo, although useablity and presentation limitations will apply.

Importing into existing systems
The BCP data and digital boundaries are provided in MapInfo Interchange (.mid/.mif) format. The BCP data files (.mif files) contain strings of table cell counts separated by commas and are not formatted tables as presented in standard census products. Users will require additional IT programming resources to incorporate these files into existing systems. All necessary product metadata will be provided to assist programmers in this task but the nature of this task and resources required by users should not be underestimated.
Viewing the data
To enable viewing of the BCP data via Census Basics, a simple data display tool will be provided to display the BCP files as formatted BCP tables. Users with access to Microsoft Excel can view a single table or an entire profile for a single geographic area by typing in the appropriate area code. For users unsure of the appropriate area codes to use the following publications should be consulted: Statistical Geography: Volume 1 - Australian Standard Geographical Classification (1216.0) or Statistical Geography: Volume 2 - Census Geographic Areas Australia (2905.0).
Release schedule (two releases)
Consistent with the two-phase release of 2001 Census data, there will be two releases of the Census Basics product. Purchasers automatically receive both releases of Census Basics as part of the purchase. A single release of the product cannot be separately ordered.
Release 1, corresponding with the launch of first release data (expected in July 2002), will contain:
- Basic Community Profile data for all first release variables; and

- available 2001 Census Digital Boundaries.

Data and digital boundaries are provided for CDs and Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) areas (excluding Urban Centres & Localities (UC/Ls)), plus the Census specific geographic areas of Postal Areas and Suburbs. Digital boundaries will also be provided for Australian Indigenous Geographic Classification (AIGC) areas for use with separately purchased Indigenous data.
Release 2, corresponding with the launch of second release data (expected in November 2002), will contain the above, with the addition of:
- Basic Community Profile data for second release variables; and

- 2001 Census Digital Boundaries for UCLs, and Commonwealth and State Electoral Divisions (CEDs & SEDs).

The following material outlines the data files and metadata structures. Example data, can be provided to users to assist in any preparatory work required for existing systems and software.
Basic Community Profile
The BCP provides detailed census data for small areas in 33 tables containing key Census characteristics of persons, families and dwellings. The profile is available for all standard Census geographic areas from Collection District (CD) level to all of Australia. The data is based on where people were enumerated on Census night. The BCP will be released in two phases. First release processing tables (Tables B01 - B21) are those tables containing variables which are relatively easy to process. Second release processing tables (Tables B22 - B33) contain variables which require more complex processing. A copy of the BCP template has been provided on The Census Guide (free CD-ROM product; call 1800 813 939 to order copies) or can be downloaded from the ABS Web Site (www.abs.gov.au/census).
Basic Community Profile data file format
Data are provided as MapInfo Interchange Export (.mid/.mif) files. The BCP data files (.mif files) contain strings of table cell counts separated by commas and are not formatted tables as presented in standard census products. There will be one data file per state/territory per geographic level type (e.g. CDs) per BCP table except for the larger tables (B03, B13, B14, B26, B27) which will be split to contain a maximum of 249 cells (e.g. B03_A, B03_B). This format allows for clients using software where the 250 column limit is applicable, which is particularly common in spreadsheet packages.

Digital boundaries
Digital boundaries are supplied as 'all points' boundaries in MapInfo Interchange Export (.mid/.mif) format. These are suitable for import into most geographic information systems and desktop mapping packages. A sample of a digital boundary file is provided below. All spatial data released by the ABS after August, 2001 will be based on the Geocentric Datum of Australia, 1994.

Metadata files and references
A number of description files will be provided that allow users to readily interpret the data files. These are provided in .csv format:

The geographic hierarchy file provides linkages from each collection district to the relevant geographic area. This file allows users to establish area hierarchies within existing systems. Exact details of the format for this file will be appended to this document as soon as it becomes available.
A formatted BCP template containing cell sequence numbers will provide a quick and easy way for users to visualise all data cells available in the BCP data files. A copy of the BCP template has been provided on The Census Guide (free CD-ROM product; call 1800 813 939 to order copies) or can be downloaded from the ABS Web Site (www.abs.gov.au/census).
2001 Census State/Territory or Australia BCPs will also be provided in Microsoft Excel and/or pdf file for the relevant State/Territory or Australia.
