To apply for the ABS Graduate Development Program you must meet the following criteria:
    • have completed a minimum qualification (recognised in Australia) equivalent to a three year Bachelor degree
    • have completed your Bachelor degree within the period 01/01/2015 - 31/12/2017
    • be an Australian citizen at the time of application
    • be available to commence the formal program in February 2018

If successful you will also be required to meet health, integrity and character clearances, and provide evidence of your qualifications.

Yes, from the moment you start as an ABS Graduate you will be an ongoing (ie. permanent) employee of the ABS. If we were to make you a verbal offer we will inform you of your actual job placement so you will know exactly where you will be working on day one. You will also receive a phone call from your team to discuss the work you will be doing before you have to formally accept the offer.

Like most new ABS employees your employment will be subject to a six month probation period. If your work performance or conduct is considered to be unsatisfactory during the probation period your employment may be terminated on the grounds of failing to meet a condition of your engagement.

Yes. Graduate roles may be available across all ABS Offices. Permanent ABS offices are located in Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Darwin, Geelong, Hobart, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. We have a separate stream just for our National Data Acquisition Centre in Geelong.

If you need to move outside of your home State to take up your graduate position you will be provided with relocation assistance. This may include relocation of yourself, your family, belongings and temporary accommodation. Successful candidates will be contacted directly to provide more information and make arrangements for their relocation.

If you have previously applied for the Graduate Development Program, you can apply again this year, as long as you continue to meet the eligibility requirements.

Our selection process is competitive, and a credit average or higher is preferred but not mandatory. While your academic results will be considered we will also consider your skills, knowledge and experience. We are looking for graduates who enjoy analysing and interpreting data to add value to statistical outputs, engaging with people, collaborating with others, are innovative and responsive to change and are motivated to be one of our high performers.

The ABS has a generous Studies Assistance Program accessible to ongoing staff, and this is available to Graduates on the completion of the Graduate Development Program. Study leave or financial assistance will not be supported while you are on the Graduate Development Program. If you are intending to do further study in 2018, and this would require you to take regular leave or work part time, it is unlikely to be supported and you should consider deferring your application until next intake.

You will be primarily contacted on the email address you provided when you registered your application with us. At the end of each stage of the selection process, you will receive an email informing you of whether you have successfully progressed to the next stage or if you were unsuccessful.

When completing the application form, it is important to include your full postal address, correct email and alternative contact numbers. If your contact details change through the year, you can update them through the online application system.
