Census Activities

These activities have been developed to help students, including those from non-English speaking backgrounds, to understand the processes and importance of completing the Census of Population and Housing.

Australian Demographics

Students compare the demography of Australia in 1988 with that of today. They compile a set of images that would appropriately illustrate the range of people who now live in Australia.

Students design an ad using Census 2006 data to attribute sex, gender and age to 10 people in the advertisement.

Indigenous History

Students study coloured images from the 1988 Australian Bureau of
Statistics, Year Book Australia, and create their own page of images that could go into this year’s Year Book Australia.

C2011_3.2History of Indigenous Australians and Census
9–10
Students read and analyse historical extracts from Western Australia that give snap shots of the changing approaches of the Australian Government towards Indigenous Australians. Visually impaired lesson available.

C2011_3.3Indigenous Australians and Census Timeline
9-10
Students cut out historical scrolls containing information about the Census and Indigenous Australians and glue onto a timeline. Students will need to use the historical extracts from Western Australian Censuses in C2011_3.2 to help.

Students graph the estimates of Indigenous Australian population versus time and analyse their results.

General Activities

Students use flow charts to understand the causes and effects of Census on a National, State, Community and Personal level.

In this activity, students learn about who is counted in a Census and then draw 4 people who would fit into these categories.

By using cutting and pasting, students learn about the various phases of the Census process.

C2011_5.1Census Picture Frames
3-7
Students consider the changing needs of their family over a 10 year period (three Census counts). They use picture frames to draw their three snapshots of their family and consider how information collected by the Census could be used to provide necessary facilities and services.

Students follow co-ordinates to make a line graph of the words CENSUS 2011. They then use their result as the logo on a census collector's bag.

Students use Quick Stats to locate 2006 data for their area. They compare percentage values of their area with Australia. They use bar charts to illustrate these and write a newspaper article that discusses in what ways the data are important for the future needs of their area.
