This chapter presents information on the characteristics and performance of industries involved in the production of information and communication technology goods and services. It also provides statistics on Internet activity in Australia and the use of information technology by businesses, farms, households and government organisations. Almost 780,000 households, or 9% of all households in Australia, chose the Internet to complete their forms online for the 2006 Census of Population and Housing, conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) in August 2006. The chapter concludes with the article Re-engineering the Census which discusses the use made by the ABS of the Internet and other technology-based innovations in carrying out Australia's largest statistical collection from households.
