INTRODUCTION

This guide provides information about the release of microdata from the 2016-17 Patient Experience Survey (PEx) for tabulation using the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) TableBuilder (TB).

Microdata are the most detailed information available from a survey and are generally the responses to individual questions on the questionnaire or data derived from two or more questions. They are released with the approval of the Australian Statistician.

This guide should be used as a reference document when accessing the microdata as it explains the data content, technical details, conditions of use and quality of the data. A data item list as well as the definitions used, are also provided.

Microdata for the PEx Survey are available through the TableBuilder product - an online tool for creating tables and graphs that can be accessed from the ABS website.

    APPLYING FOR ACCESS

To apply for access to TableBuilder, register and apply in the Registration Centre. All users are required to agree to the terms and conditions of use before access can be granted.

Further information on access and subscribing to paid products can be found in How to Apply for Microdata.

Information about TB and about microdata in general is available from the Microdata Entry Page on the ABS website.

    FURTHER INFORMATION

The PEx survey was conducted throughout Australia from July 2016 to June 2017 and is designed to provide annual statistics about the access and barriers to a range of health care services. It includes data from people who did not access health services as well as those who did.

This TB product is the only microdata release for the 2016-17 PEx survey. Further information about the PEx survey and the microdata can be found in the various pages associated with this product, including:
    • A detailed list of data items for the 2016-17 PEx TableBuilder, available in the Downloads tab.
    • The Quality Declaration and links to the Abbreviations and Glossary in the Explanatory Notes tab.
    • Other related products on the Related Information tab.

For summary information on the survey, please see Patient Experiences in Australia: Summary of Findings, 2016-17 (cat. no. 4839.0).

    DATA AVAILABLE ON REQUEST

Data collected in the survey but not included in TableBuilder may be available from the ABS, on request, as statistics in tabulated form.

Subject to confidentiality and sampling variability constraints, special tabulations can be produced incorporating data items, populations and geographic areas selected to meet individual requirements. These are available, on request, on a fee for service basis. Contact the National Information and Referral Service on 1300 135 070 or client.services@abs.gov.au for further information.
