ABOUT THIS RELEASE
Age, Sex and Country of Birth of Person (updated 26/9/12) are the basic demographic variables used in population statistics. Age is most commonly used to differentiate populations in terms of the time elapsed (usually in complete years), generally from the date of live birth to a point in time, for example the date of a particular survey. Sex is a basic demographic variable used almost universally in statistical and administrative data collections relating to people. The variable is useful in its own right and is also widely used with other characteristics of the population in cross-classified tables. Country of Birth of Person (updated 26/9/12) measures the ethnic and cultural composition of the Australian population; it can also be used with a range of other variables to measure cultural diversity in its broader sense.
