High volume maintained In Tasmanian woodchip production

Tasmanian woodchipping maintained its high volume of production in the December quarter 2000, after reaching new record levels of production in the previous two quarters.

Figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show chipped and ground wood production reached 1,420,559 tonnes, an increase of 17.7% compared to the same quarter in 1999, even though there was a decrease of 31,170 tonnes from the production record of the September quarter 2000.

During the December quarter 2000 1,328,227 cubic metres of logs were delivered to mills for woodchipping, 20.3% more than in the December quarter of 1999.

Log deliveries to sawmills and plywood mills for the December quarter 2000 totalled 205,235 cubic metres, a decrease of 9.0% compared to the same period in 1999.

The overall sawmilling output of timber was 84,334 cubic metres, a 10.2% decrease compared to the same quarter in 1999. Hardwood sawn timber production decreased by 9.4% to 42,870 cubic metres and softwood timber production (41,464 cubic metres) also decreased 11.0% from the same period in 1999.

The total volume of logs delivered to sawmills and woodchip mills in Tasmania during the December quarter 2000 was 1,533,463 cubic metres, an increase of 15.3% on the previous December quarter. Logs from crown land accounted for 63% of this total.
