ABS and AFL team up to make stats fun The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has teamed up with the Australian Football League (AFL) to develop the ABS Footy Stats Program. The ABS Footy Stats Program provides an engaging introduction to the world of statistics by using football to make the learning of statistics interesting and enjoyable. Footy Stats is aimed at helping build the statistical abilities of Australia's Indigenous youth by getting them to think critically about statistics and developing their basic skills in collecting, interpreting and communicating statistics. The program features an introduction by former Adelaide Crows player, AFL champion and dual Norm Smith medallist, Andrew McLeod who reinforces that "being good with numbers and understanding what they mean, is an important skill to have, one which can help you make choices, both on and off the field'. Footy Stats further shows the commitment of the ABS and the AFL to increasing Indigenous students interest in statistics. The Footy Stats resources will be officially launched at 2:30 pm on Friday 18 May 2012 at the Palmerston College in the Northern Territory. Students from the College were involved in the filming of the instructional videos that accompany the web based materials.
