District Managers needed for Australia’s first digital Census

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) needs up to 65 District Managers to oversee operations across Australia in the lead up to, and following, the 2016 Census of Population and Housing.

Head of the 2016 Census Program, Duncan Young said the Census will count close to 10 million dwellings and approximately 24 million people in Australia on Census night, 9 August 2016.

“Every five years the Census provides an important statistical snapshot of our nation. The data collected from the Census will support future funding decisions for services and infrastructure including housing, transport, education, industry, hospitals, and the environment.

“We can’t collect this data without the help of the large temporary workforce we recruit each Census, starting with District Managers.

“The ABS is looking for people to fill these critical roles now. If you’re a good communicator, know your community well, and have strong project and people management skills, I encourage you to apply to be part of one of the most exciting projects in Australia,” Mr Young said.

The 2016 Census will be Australia’s first digital Census, with 65 per cent of Australian households expected to complete the Census online.

Mr Young said the roles and responsibilities of the 2016 Census staff have changed significantly to reflect the digital-first approach.

“2016 Census field staff will need to be tech-savvy and are expected to use their own computer, smartphone or tablet,” Mr Young said.

District Managers will typically supervise the recruitment and training of up to 25 Area Supervisors and up to 250 Field Officers. In urban areas, data will be collected from up to 40,000 dwellings. They will also be responsible for quality checks on delivery and collection activities, data security, and ensuring the health and safety of their teams.

“District Managers will engage heavily with their local communities to ensure everyone is included in the Census. This includes people who may face barriers to online participation and other population groups such as people experiencing homelessness and people from culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) backgrounds,” Mr Young said.

District Managers will earn up to $50.15 per hour. Contracts will offer flexible working hours and will run for up to 10 months. Applicants must be Australian citizens or have the legal right to work in Australia. Applicants must also hold a valid driver’s licence.
