South Australia to be Census tested: ABS

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is about to commence a major test of its processes and procedures in readiness for next year’s Census of Population and Housing on 9 August, 2011.

ABS South Australia Regional Director Mr Paul Mahoney today announced the ABS will be conducting a Census test in and around Salisbury and Port Augusta, including some Indigenous communities, from 15 June, 2010.

Mr Mahoney said these areas had been chosen for the test, as they represent suburban, regional and remote Australia, and will allow the ABS to fine tune procedures for the national Census in 2011.

“Approximately 5000 households will take part in the Census test within South Australia, which will form part of wider test covering some 20,000 households in this state, New South Wales and Western Australia,” Mr Mahoney said.

“There will also be around 40 field staff employed for the Census test in South Australia, and we expect more than 3500 field staff will be employed in our state for the Census itself in 2011.

“Some residents taking part in the Census test will have the opportunity to fill in their form online via the eCensus, which is a fast, secure and easy way to participate.

“All residents who participate will not only be helping the ABS, but their community and the nation, and the ABS thanks all participants and our local partners who have supported us so far.”

Key dates for the Census test:

Form Delivery – commenced on 4 June, 2010

Census Test Night – 15 June, 2010

Collection of test forms – from 16 June, 2010
