People living in the inner-city area of Prahran earn some of Victoria's highest incomes, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

The area of Stonnington-Prahran recorded the highest average total income in Victoria in 2007-08 ($82,910), followed by Bayside-Brighton ($80,948).

Stonnington-Malvern ($77,316), Boroondara-Kew ($75,385) and Port-Phillip-West ($73,187) round out the top five.

Around 16% of regions in Victoria recorded average total incomes above the state average ($43,704). Of these, all but 3 were located within the Melbourne metropolitan area.

Outside of Melbourne, highest average total incomes were recorded in Newtown in Geelong ($51,181), Macedon Ranges-Balance, north-west of Melbourne ($47,546), and Latrobe-Traralgon ($44,855).

These data include income from wages and salaries, own unincorporated business, investment, and superannuation and annuities, but do not include government pensions and allowances.
