Victorian Governor launches campaign to recruit 6,000 Census collectors

John Landy M.B.E., Governor of Victoria, called for the help of Victorians across the State, when he launched the Victorian Census Collector recruitment campaign for the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) 2001 National Census of Population and Housing, at the Melbourne Museum today.

The Governor spoke in support of the recruitment campaign and the job opportunities for 6,000 community-minded Victorians. The Governor emphasised the importance of the Census to the entire community and urged all Victorians to get behind the Census.

Guest speakers at the launch Kevin Coombs O.A.M., past paralympian and current Victorian and Tasmanian Director, Aboriginal Hostels Ltd, and Stefan Romaniw, Chair Victorian Multicultural Commission, also echoed the Governor's call for support from all of the Victorian community.

The recruitment campaign is the final phase in the Australian Bureau of Statistics' preparations to run Australia's 14th National Census of Population and Housing on August 7, this year. The national recruitment campaign to employ more than 30,000 census workers is one of the biggest-ever peacetime recruitment drives for temporary staff undertaken by any single organisation.

Census Collectors work part-time for a six week period, with most of the activity occurring on weekends and evenings around census time. Census Collectors will be thoroughly trained and will be paid between $800-$1,500 before tax, depending on workload.

"It's the type of job that can just earn you a bit of extra money which can help pay the school fees or can be put towards your next holiday," said Andrew Henderson, ABS Director, Population Census Victoria.

"Victorians have always realised how beneficial the Census is to the community in terms of business and government planning for better facilities and services, and now with this being the first census of the 21st century, we're looking for people across this State who want to make a contribution to the community and help the Australia have the best ever census".

"Just like The Governor I urge the community minded people of Victoria to get behind the Census and pick up an application form from Australia Post outlets or agencies."

Census Collector job advertisements will appear in newspapers and radio stations across Victoria from this Saturday, 17 March. Application forms are only available from Australia Post outlets and agencies. Applications close in three weeks, on Monday, April 9.

The Census is a comprehensive snapshot of Australia, taken every five years. It provides a primary source of information used by a wide range of government, business and community organisations alike in planning for the future.
