Over $6 billion spent protecting environment Governments, industry and households in Australia spent an estimated $6.4 billion in 1992-93 and $6.5 billion in 1993-94 on measures to protect the environment, according to a report released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics. These estimates are the third in a series of reports presenting environment protection expenditure by the public and private sectors, and are contained in Environment Protection Expenditure, Australia, 1992-93 and 1993-94. Total environment protection expenditure for these two years represented 1.6 per cent and 1.5 per cent of GDP respectively. The report shows that public sector expenditure on environment protection accounted for $3.1 billion in both years (just under half of the total expenditure). This amount comprises outlays on sanitation and protection of the environment by all levels of government, as well as other identified environment protection expenditure by Commonwealth and State governments, and public authority gas and electricity utilities. Major expenditures by the public sector were outlays on sewerage ($606 million in 1992-93 and $743 million in 1993-94), and expenditure by the Commonwealth and States on protection of biodiversity and landscape ($569 million in 1992-93 and $633 million in 1993-94). Expenditure by the household sector was $1.7 billion (27 per cent of total expenditure) in 1992-93 and $2 billion (30 per cent) in 1993-94. These partial estimates by the household sector include expenditure on products for vehicles to prevent emissions to air, septic systems and sewerage charges, insulation, special environmental levies and government fees and charges. Total agriculture, mining, manufacturing, service and other industries expenditure to protect the environment amounted to $1.6 billion in 1992-93 and $1.5 billion in 1993-94. Service and other industries waste management expenses were estimated for the first time at $349 million (5 per cent of total expenditure) in 1992-93 and $451 million (7 per cent) in 1993-94. The ABS plans to continue collection of estimates of environment protection expenditure on an annual basis as an indication of the response of various sectors to environment protection regulations and policies, as well as contributing to the environmental 'satellite' accounts currently being developed by the ABS.
