M.O.U. continues Australian statistical co-operation with Indonesia

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and its Indonesian counterpart, BPS-Statistics Indonesia (BPS), will continue their statistical co-operation program under a new Memorandum of Understanding signed in Canberra today.

The Director General of BPS, Dr Soedarti Surbakti, and the Australian Statistician, Mr Dennis Trewin, signed the updated MOU at ABS headquarters in Belconnen. Dr Soedarti is on her first visit to ABS as Director General of BPS.

Dr Soedarti said "The updated MOU reflects the new and continuing statistical priorities which the BPS will need to address to assist policy development and planning in Indonesia."

"The five-year MOU between BPS and ABS, represents the second stage of statistical co-operation between the two agencies, and includes assistance in areas such as agriculture, industry, social and demography statistics, adding these to the range of statistics in which co-operation has already developed," Mr Trewin said today.

"The main difference to the first MOU is that there is much more emphasis on social statistics," he said.
Dr Soedarti invited Mr Trewin to visit Indonesia in the near future to finalise a work program under the updated MOU.

Funding for the assistance has been provided through AusAID's Australia-Indonesia Government Sector Linkages Program (GSLP).

Co-operation with Indonesia is a key part of ABS's international relations. The Bureau is an important and active member of the international statistical community and is committed to sharing its knowledge. It participates in a variety of international fora and provides technical assistance to statistical agencies in a number of countries.
