ABS concludes WA meat production survey

The Australian Bureau of Statistics has just finalised a survey on meat production in Western Australia.

The survey took a close look at the Western Australian sheep flock and beef cattle herd, producers' breeding and slaughtering intentions for sheep and cattle, and intended exports of live sheep.

Results from the survey show that Western Australian graziers expect the intended turnoff of sheep for slaughter during the period January to June 1999 to exceed 2.9 million, which represents a decrease of 25% compared to the previous 6 months. The intended turnoff of cattle during the period January to June 1999, is 418,000. This represents an increase of 8% compared to the previous 6 months.

The results show that producers believe the numbers of sheep destined for the live export trade during the period January to June 1999 will be approximately 1.9 million, which is similar to the number exported for the same period in 1998.

Results from this survey, which was carried out in association with the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, will be used by government and industry organisations to plan for the future development of the livestock industry in Western Australia.

Further information on the survey data and the background to the survey can be obtained from Ed O'Loughlin, Project Manager, Agriculture Western Australia on (08) 9368 3227.
