Producer Price Indexes: New ABS publication out today

The second release of data in the Australian Bureau of Statistics' (ABS) new consolidation of producer price indexes has been made today. The publication is Producer Price Indexes, Australia, June Quarter 2001 (cat. no. 6427.0).

The first release in the new series, International Trade Price Indexes, Australia, June Quarter 2001 (cat. no. 6457.0) was issued last Friday.

Today's release contains the overarching, economy-wide stage of production indexes and new integrated analysis drawn from data previously published in eight separate publications. Industry indexes are grouped according to broad sectors of the economy.

Australian Statistician Dennis Trewin said the new format would result in producer price index data being more integrated, allowing easier interpretation of the data.

"This restructure, by providing a new focus for the producer price indexes, will enable users to better understand price pressures as they impact on the producing sectors of the economy," he said.

"One publication will contain the international trade price indexes and the other will contain the remaining producer price indexes. The headline indicator of the new producer price indexes publication will be the recently established economy-wide stage of production indexes, reflecting the wider scope of these indexes in comparison to manufacturing sector price indexes which have historically been the headline producer price indexes. All information presently published will continue to be available."
