WA population expected to reach 2 million next week

Western Australia's population is expected to reach 2 million during the week commencing 10 January 2005, the Australian Bureau of Statistics announced today.

The Acting Western Australian Regional Director, Dave Roarty, said the population milestone would form part of Western Australia's demographic history.

"Our projection takes into account all the information that we have available from births, deaths, interstate and overseas arrivals and departures, and the 2001 Population Census."

Mr Roarty said it was not feasible to determine who exactly the 2 millionth Western Australian would be because of the variable nature of population increases.

However, it could be a person born around that time, a person who arrives as a permanent settler in Western Australia, or an Australian returning home after living overseas for more than 12 months, or perhaps a mover from another state or territory.

In 1901 the population of Western Australia was 188,566 and the state reached its first million in 1970.
