CensusAtSchool 2013: Questionnaire now open The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has today announced the opening of its 2013 CensusAtSchool Questionnaire. CensusAtSchool is a free and voluntary online questionnaire and analysis resource for students in Years 5 to 12. Students submit real data about everyday interests and opinions on various environmental and social issues. Since its national launch by the ABS in 2006, approximately 1 in 4 Australian schools have participated. In 2012, this represented participation of over 21,000 students. The Australian Statistician, Mr Brian Pink said "We are really proud of the CensusAtSchool project. It teaches students the importance of statistics in a way that engages them". The CensusAtSchool questionnaire asks students about such things as their eye colour, how they engage with technology, and their opinions on social and environmental issues. "Last year Australian students identified reducing bullying in schools as their most important issue, it will be interesting to see if this remains the case in 2013" said Mr Pink. Jean Arnott, Specialist Teacher Consultant to the ABS, said CensusAtSchool is a great learning tool. "I have used CensusAtSchool with several classes. All students enjoyed collecting and entering their data into the questionnaire. When it came to taking a sample and interpreting the data, they were engaged because the results of their investigations had real meaning for them" The CensusAtSchool questionnaire will remain open until 19 July and can be completed on the ABS website at www.abs.gov.au/censusatschool
