ABS opens new Northern Territory Regional Office

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) new Northern Territory office was opened in a ceremony earlier today by the Australian Statistician, Brian Pink.

‘This office plays an important role in supporting the ABS in building a rich statistical picture of the Territory, through community and government collaboration’, the Australian Statistician said today.

Mr Pink continued by saying ‘The NT office makes a significant contribution in the planning and running of the five-yearly Census. With preparations well underway for the next Census in August 2011, one of the biggest challenges we face is counting the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population, especially those living in remote areas.

‘It is vital that the ABS and local agencies here in the Northern Territory work closely together to achieve outcomes that improve the lives of all Territorians.'

NT Regional Director Tom Joseph, added, ‘The ABS has a long and proud history in the Northern Territory community, with the first ABS office opening in 1954’.

‘After 36 years in the AANT building, it was time to modernise our facilities and we are privileged to be able to move into the Civitas building, which reflects contemporary Darwin architecture.’
