ADVICE ON THE USE OF 2011 PRELIMINARY REBASED ERP

The preliminary rebasing process has resulted in Australia's estimated resident population for the period September 2006 to June 2011 to be revised down significantly, which has effected estimates of population growth. The September 2012 edition of Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0) includes advice on how to use the data in the Feature Article: Advice on the use of 2011 preliminary rebased ERP, and in the Technical Note: The Impact of Improvements to the 2011 PES on Measuring Population Growth (2006-2011).

RELEASE OF MIGRATION AUSTRALIA 2010-11

Migration, Australia, 2010-11 (cat. no. 3412.0), was released on 15 August 2012 and has incorporated the preliminary rebased resident population estimates which are based on the 2011 Census of Population and Housing. For the first time, the Australian Bureau of Statistics has also prepared a series of annual experimental estimates of regional internal migration which have been released with this publication. In addition, the publication has a reduced commentary to allow capacity for extra data cubes to become available - see list below. This structure will also be mirrored in future annual demographic statistics publications, including Births, Australia (cat. no. 3301.0), Deaths, Australia (cat. no. 3302.0) and Regional Population Growth (cat. no. 3218.0). The ABS welcomes feedback on these changes.

New data cubes now available in Migration, Australia, 2010-11 (cat. no. 3412.0) are:
  • Net overseas migration, Arrivals and departures, State/territory, Major groupings and visa — 2004-05 to 2009-10,
  • Experimental regional internal migration estimates by Statistical Local Area — 2006-07 to 2010-11,
  • Experimental regional internal migration estimates by age by Statistical Division and Statistical Subdivision — 2006-07 to 2010-11,
  • Experimental regional internal migration estimates by Statistical Division and Statistical Subdivision of arrival and departure — 2006-07 to 2010-11,
  • Experimental regional internal migration estimates by age by part of state — 2006-07 to 2010-11.

REPROCESSING OF OVERSEAS ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES

An issue has been identified with Overseas Arrivals and Departures data for the months of May and June 2012. Investigations by the ABS and DIAC uncovered a processing lag in passenger cards, in particular from Australian sea ports. Plans are in place to re-process the data and re-release the updated data for May and June 2012 with the scheduled August release of Overseas Arrivals and Departures (cat. no 3401.0) on 9 October 2012.

TREATMENT OF INTERCENSAL ERROR

The intercensal error for the 2006-2011 period is the highest on record and the ABS is formulating an appropriate treatment for this in the final rebasing process. The September 2012 edition of Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0) includes a short discussion paper highlighting the current position as well as an invitation for public comment on the issue in Feature Article: ABS Treatment of Intercensal Error for 2006-2011.

PRELIMINARY POPULATION ESTIMATES OF ABORIGINAL AND TORRES STRAIT ISLANDER AUSTRALIANS

The ABS has published preliminary estimates of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous population as at 30 June 2011 in Australian Demographic Statistics (cat. no. 3101.0), released on 27 September 2012. Estimates are published by five year age groups, sex and state/territory. No further disaggregation will be released until final estimates are compiled and released in August 2013.

For more information see Information Paper: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Demographic Statistics Work Program and Release Plans, April 2012 (cat. no. 3238.0.55.003).
