REBUILD OF THE OVERSEAS ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES (OAD) SYSTEM AT THE ABS
Currently, the ABS is completing work on a rebuild of the Overseas Arrivals and Departures (OAD) system. The aim is to improve the quality of OAD data and improve the quality of the imputations being used within the processing system. As OAD data is the major input for estimating Net Overseas Migration (NOM) it is envisaged that the quality of characteristics available within the NOM collection will also improve. These changes will make some improvements to the preliminary estimation of NOM. One of the main improvements is the imputation for country of birth, in particular for New Zealand citizens (for which country of birth is not available from a visa application, nor more recently from the New Zealand biometric passports). The ABS are currently testing the effects of the revised OAD data on the NOM system and related outputs. The current plan is to release the improvements for preliminary NOM into production with the release of Australian Demographic Statistics, December Quarter 2012 (cat. no. 3101.0) in June 2013; and for OAD with the release of Overseas Arrivals and Departures — Australia, July 2013 (cat. no. 3401.0) in September 2013.
LATEST RELEASE OF OVERSEAS ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES (OAD)
The December 2012 issue of Overseas Arrivals and Departures — Australia, (cat. no. 3401.0) was released on 6 February 2013. It includes a Feature Article - International Movements—2012. The article provides an overview of border crossings in the calendar year of 2012. There was a record 29.8 million movements with 96% of all these movements being short-term (under 1 year). This translates to 1,312 crossings per 1,000 Australian population. Ten years earlier in 2002, this was 874 crossings per 1,000 Australian population.
The article provides an analysis of annual short-term visitor arrivals and short-term resident departures. A more detailed examination, based on original estimates, is given on the top 10 source and destination countries for 2012. It also includes an analysis by age, sex, reason for journey and duration of stay/absence.
| UPDATES TO REGIONAL POPULATION ESTIMATES|
Datacubes containing final rebased ERP from 2001 to 2011 will be released on 30 August 2013. Total estimates will be added to Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2011 (cat. no. 3218.0) and age/sex estimates will be added to Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2011 (cat. no. 3235.0). Historical population estimates based on the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS) will also be revised and released on this date.
