    Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS)

    OVERVIEW

The Household Use of Information Technology (HUIT) topic presents details about household access to and persons use of the internet. Prior to 2012-13 the data was compiled from HUIT question modules collected via multiple sources including the Multi-Purpose Household Survey (MPHS). From 2012-13 onwards the data was only compiled from the HUIT topic in the MPHS. The MPHS is designed to provide statistics for a number of small self-contained topics and is conducted each financial year throughout Australia from July to June as a supplement to the monthly Labour Force Survey (LFS). The HUIT topic is included in the MPHS every two years. The 2016-17 release is the final iteration of the survey.

    PURPOSE
The ABS has recognised that there is a user need for a range of statistics on household use of information technology. While the HUIT topic seeks to maximise consistency and comparability over time by minimising changes to the survey, ongoing survey review has adjusted to the changing needs of users of information and communication technology statistics.

    SCOPE
The scope of the LFS is restricted to people aged 15 years and over and excludes the following:
  • members of the permanent defence forces
  • certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments usually excluded from Census and estimated resident populations
  • overseas residents in Australia
  • members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependants)

In addition the MPHS excludes the following from its scope:
  • people living in Indigenous Communities in very remote parts of Australia
  • people living in non-private dwellings such as hotels, university residences, students at boarding schools, patients in hospitals, inmates of prisons and residents of other institutions (e.g. retirement homes, homes for persons with disabilities), and
  • visitors to private dwellings.

The LFS applies coverage rules that aim to ensure each person is associated with only one dwelling and hence has only one chance of selection in the survey.

    COLLECTION HISTORY

Data on household use of information technology has been previously collected by the ABS in the Population Survey Monitor (1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000), the Survey of Education, Training and Information Technology (2001), the General Social Survey (2002), the National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Survey (2002), the Survey of Disability, Ageing and Carers (SDAC - 2003), the Children's Participation in Cultural and Leisure Activities Survey (2003 and 2006), the Time Use Survey (2006). The MPHS has been the vehicle for the collection of core HUIT data.
