NAME OF ORGANISATION The Labour Force Experience survey collects a range of data about the labour force experiences of persons aged 15 years and over during the 12 month period prior to the survey date. It presents information about time spent in labour force activities, including episodes of work or looking for work, and time spent out of the labour force. Estimates from the survey are used to monitor the extent and nature of labour force participation over an extended period and to complement gross flows estimates from the monthly Labour Force Survey in the analysis of labour market dynamics. The information is used to construct profiles of various groups within the labour force, particularly those looking for work. This survey is conducted as part of the Monthly Population Survey, which comprises the Labour Force Survey and, in most months, a supplementary survey topic.
SCOPE - Labour Force Survey The Labour Force Survey includes all persons aged 15 and over except: From July 1993 Jervis Bay Territory is also excluded from the scope of the survey. Before July 1993 it was included in estimates for the Australian Capital Territory.
SCOPE - Labour Force Experience Survey The Labour Force Experience survey also excludes persons aged 70 years and over; visitors to private dwellings, students who were boarding at school, some patients in hospitals and sanatoriums and inmates of reformatories, gaols, etc.
From July 1997, all supplementary surveys excluded persons in remote and sparsely settled areas of Australia. The exclusion of these persons has only a minor effect on estimates for individual States or Territories.
COVERAGE - Labour Force Survey In the Labour Force Survey, coverage rules are applied which aim to ensure that each person is associated with only one dwelling, and hence has only one chance of selection. The chance of a person being enumerated at two separate dwellings in the one survey is considered to be negligible.
Persons who are away from their usual residence for six weeks or less at the time of interview are enumerated at their usual residence (relevant information may be obtained from other usual residents present at the time of the survey). Conceptual framework The Labour Force Experience survey is designed to provide information on the labour force experience of the civilian population aged 15 years and over during the year ending February. It allows in particular the analysis of specific groups, such as persons changing labour force status during the period, and is the only source of data for labour force experience over a 12 month period.
