    OVERVIEW

    The purpose of the survey was to collect results relating to part-time, casual and temporary employment, to collect data on the benefits and conditions of employment for specific categories of those persons who usually work on a part-time and non-permanent basis.

    PURPOSE

    Provide greater understanding of the nature and composition of this major growth area in the NSW labour market. Part-time employment has accounted for substantial employment growth in NSW in recent years, however little is known about the employment arrangements such as permanent/casual, hours worked per day and number of days worked per week. This has important implications for ability to substitute part-time workers for full-time workers and for the relationship between part-time work and education attendance patterns.

    SCOPE

    Scope: NSW civilian population aged 15 and over (in private dwellings only), excluding self-employed people.

    Coverage: Standard Labour Force coverage rules.

    The following are exclusions on coverage for the labour force:

    • members of the permanent defence forces;
    • certain diplomatic personnel of overseas governments, customarily excluded from census and estimated populations;
    • overseas residents in Australia;
    • members of non-Australian defence forces (and their dependants) stationed in Australia.
