    OVERVIEW

The Survey of Music and Performing Arts at Major Venues collected data from venues in capital cities only where regular performances took place on a commercial basis or, in the case of irregular performances, where the size of the venue suggested that attendances would be significant e.g. large rock/pop concerts at outdoor venues. Data published included the number of performances and total attendances in each capital city by type of event.

As only selected venues were included in the collections the results do not purport to represent the total number of performances and total attendances in the capital cities. The results represent the minimum figure for performances and attendances in the capital cities.

    PURPOSE

Results from the Survey of Music and Performing Arts at Major Venues in capital cities will assist Commonwealth and State governments in the allocation of grants and will assist performing arts bodies in gaining sponsorship. The collection was undertaken to provide an indication of the size and nature of the music and performing arts side of the entertainment industry.

    SCOPE

Data were collected from venues in capital cities only where regular performances took place on a commercial basis or, in the case of irregular performances, where the size of the venue suggested that attendances would be significant e.g. large rock/pop concerts at outdoor venues. The list of venues included was compiled from Australia Council publications, industry publications and newspaper advertisements.
