    OVERVIEW

    The Survey of Training and Education (STE) was conducted throughout Australia during April and May 1993. The survey obtained information on training and education undertaken, by persons aged 15 to 64 years, during the preceding 12 months. Information collected included socio-demographic characteristics (such as sex, age, earnings and educational attainment), work history details (such as occupation, industry and job tenure), recent study for educational qualifications, and details of training courses attended (such as time spent on, and employer support for, training courses).

    PURPOSE

    To update information collected in the 1989 Survey of How Workers Get Their Training (HWGTT); to provide baseline estimates and benchmarks on other topics; and to update information collected in the 1989 survey of Career Paths of Persons With Trades Qualifications, which was attached to HWGTT.

    SCOPE

    Coverage rules were applied which aimed to ensure that each person eligible on scope was associated with only one dwelling and hence had only one chance of selection.

    DATA DETAIL

    Conceptual framework

    The populations of interest in STE were drawn broadly from persons aged 15-64 years who were currently in the labour force, or who had held a wage or salary job in the previous 12 months. Information collected included socio-demographic characteristics (such as sex, age, earnings and educational attainment), work history details (such as occupation, industry and job tenure), recent study for educational qualifications, and details of training courses attended (such as time spent on, and employer support for, training courses). The survey also included a repeat of the "Survey of Career Paths of Persons With Trade Qualifications", which was first enumerated in 1989.

    Main outputs

    Population or Sub-population - Units: persons only.

    Characteristics of Interest.

    The main topics covered in the 1993 Survey of Training and Education (STE) were:

    • socio-demographic characteristics;
    • labour force characteristics at the time of the survey;
    • earnings from main job, or from own business;
    • work history;
    • educational attainment, for highest and second-highest qualifications held;
    • recent study for educational qualifications;
    • whether qualifications were required to obtain job with main period employer;
    • in-house training courses (if any, to a maximum of four);
    • external training courses (if any, to a maximum of four);
    • computer usage and proficiency;
    • training requirements;
    • barriers to training; and
    • training provision (i.e., providing training as part of one's job).

    Type of Statistics: number estimates, some means, proportions (as percentages), some earnings figures in current 1993 dollars.

    Data Breakdowns: levels at which the data is to be disaggregated - by state, by industry, by sex, by age group; and by 20 output populations, as detailed below. STE output includes both person estimates, and 'course' estimates. 'Course' estimates refer to the number of attendances reported for given types of training courses. Neither household level nor income unit level estimates were derived for STE.
