Broad Description
The statistics provide a quarterly asset profile of the investments held by managed funds institutions.

Purpose of Data
Statistics provide an overall measure of the size and composition of the managed funds market in Australia. They also monitor changes in market share between the managed funds institutions.

Detailed Description
Population
Life offices, ISC regulated superannuation funds, public unit trusts, friendly societies, common funds, cash management trusts and investment managers.
Superannuation Data Items
Total assets of superannuation funds on a consolidated basis ($m). Type of assets held by superannuation funds on an unconsolidated basis ($m). Type of assets include cash and deposits, loans and placements, short term securities by type of security held and issuing institution/sector, long term securities by type of security held and issuing institution/sector, equities and units in trusts, other financial assets, non-financial assets and overseas assets.

Data in the publication are obtained from 3 sources; ABS Survey of Financial Information; ABS/ISC Quarterly Survey of Superannuation and other Insurance and Superannuation Commission data sources.

Method of Collection
The ABS Survey of Financial Information is a mail based survey of financial and corporate trading enterprises and general government institutions. The Survey of Superannuation includes all ISC regulated superannuation funds with assets above $10m and/or with over 500 members. ISC data sources are principally data aggregates derived from the ISC compliance database.

Frequency
Data on cash management trusts are compiled and published monthly. All other data are collected on a quarterly basis.

Timeliness
Statistics are released approx 10 weeks after the reference period. Data on cash management trusts are also released as a Special Data Service approximately 4 weeks after the reference period.

Historical Data
Statistics on cash management trusts are available on a monthly basis from June 1988 onwards; all other statistics are available from June 1988 quarter and every quarter thereafter.

Geographic Breakdown
Australia only.

Confidentiality and Availability
Data are subject to confidentiality restrictions under the Census and Statistics Act 1905.

Unpublished Information
More detailed data on financial instruments (assets) are generally available. More detailed data by type of institution are
available for certain institutions eg. public unit trusts are further classified as listed and unlisted and according to investment strategy eg. equity trusts, mortgage trusts etc. The more detailed data are available as a Special Data Service only.
