NOTES

INTRODUCTION

This release presents information about the incidence of innovation in Australian business and related practices or influences. It reports data as collected by the 2006-07 Business Characteristics Survey (BCS).

Collection of these data using the BCS vehicle is part the ABS' Integrated Business Characteristics Strategy (IBCS). The IBCS represents an expansion on the range and nature of innovation related statistics.

A key part of the IBCS is the production of annual business use of information technology and innovation indicators, with a more detailed set of items for each of these topics collected every second year (i.e. in alternating years). The 2006-07 BCS collected detailed information relating to the incidence of innovation and related practices/influences in Australian business. An overview of the ABS statistical and output program related to innovation is provided in Appendix 1: ABS Collection of Innovation Statistics.

Innovation related content of the BCS draws on the concepts included in the 'Oslo Manual, Guidelines for Collecting and Interpreting Innovation Data' (Third Edition, 2005).

COMPARABILITY WITH PREVIOUSLY RELEASED INNOVATION STATISTICS

The statistics included in this release are not directly comparable with those included in previous issues of this release. As part of implementing the IBCS, changes to scope, reference period, industry classification and concepts measured, have impacted on comparability.

The estimates in this release are based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 edition. Estimates in the previous issues of this release were based on the 1993 version of ANZSIC. This change has impacted on direct comparability, more information about this change is provided in the Appendix 2 : Changes to Industry Classification. This Appendix contains some data from the 2006-07 BCS presented on the ANZSIC93 basis.

STRUCTURE OF THIS RELEASE

There are two components to this release: web based information and data cubes. The data cubes contain detailed tables for the data that underpin the tables, graphs and commentary included in the web based information.

REVISIONS IN THIS RELEASE

Some of the data contained within the section, Summary of Findings - Innovation in Australian Business, were first included in the initial release from the 2006-07 BCS, Summary Indicators of IT Use and Innovation in Australian Business, 2006-07 (cat. no. 8166.0). As indicated in that release, quality assurance for the 2006-07 BCS was still underway and estimates included were subject to revision for future related releases. The revisions are relatively minor and all have been annotated in the tables presented.
