A new methodology and revised definitions will be adopted for producing estimates of livestock slaughtering as a result of an ongoing quality review of this collection and following consultation with key users.
The livestock slaughtered estimates are derived from a monthly collection of activity for major abattoirs, with adjustments to account for smaller operators and on-farm slaughtering. For future releases, on-farm slaughter of livestock will not be included in the estimates of livestock slaughtering. The calf and pig definitions used in the Livestock Slaughtering collection will also be aligned to current industry standards.
The above changes will be introduced for the July 2010 estimates and all future releases of Livestock and Meat, Australia (cat. no. 7218.0.55.001) as well as related quarterly slaughtering estimates published in Livestock Products, Australia (cat. no. 7215.0). To assist users in accounting for any associated breaks in time series, future issues of both publications will incorporate re-based historical estimates.

- In June 2010, the trend estimate for cattle slaughterings continued to increase, up 1% from May 2010 to 662 thousand.
- The trend estimate for sheep slaughterings continued to fall in June 2010, down to 499 thousand, a decrease of 5% from May 2010 and 44% from June 2009.
- Lamb slaughterings in June 2010 increased by 2% from May 2010.
- The trend estimate for pig slaughterings remained relatively steady at 385 thousand.

- In June 2010, the trend estimate for beef production rose 3% from June 2009, to 182 thousand tonnes.
- The trend estimate for mutton production continued to decline, falling 39 from June 2009 to 11 thousand tonnes.
- In June 2010 lamb production increased 3% from May 2010.
- Pig meat production was up 4% from June 2009.
