This publication presents, for the first time, the geographic distribution, at the detailed level, of the Indigenous population of Australia, using results of the 1996 Census of Population and Housing. For this purpose, an Indigenous geographic classification was specially developed after extensive consultation with users. Details of this classification are given on page 2 of this publication.
