MARCH KEY POINTS


ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
  • In original terms, the March 2011 merchandise imports were $18,544m, an increase of $1,961m (12%) on the revised February 2011 merchandise imports of $16,583m.


PRELIMINARY BALANCE OF PAYMENTS GOODS IMPORTS
  • Preliminary analysis shows that goods debits (imports) on a balance of payments basis in original terms increased $2,117m (13%). In seasonally adjusted terms goods debits increased $291m (2%) from $18,062m in February 2011 to $18,353m in March 2011. Intermediate and other merchandise goods rose $623m (8%) with the fuels and lubricants component up $615m (23%) after increasing by 27% the previous month. Non-monetary gold rose $84m (25%). Capital goods fell $350m (8%) and consumption goods fell $66m (1%).


IMPACT OF THE FLOODS
  • Flooding began in late December 2010 in Queensland, and was more extensive in both Queensland and other states in January 2011. The collection and processing of data included in this publication were not disrupted. The specific impact of the floods on these estimates cannot be quantified.
