  • In the September quarter 2009, there was a small decrease (-0.4%) in the price index of materials for housing construction in Perth. This was the first decrease recorded since September 2001. The fall in the price of steel (-8.6%), which had climbed steeply over previous quarters, contributed significantly to this decrease.
  • Through the year to September 2009, the price index for materials used in house building rose by 2.4%. This was marginally higher than the national rise (2.3%), with Hobart (4.4%) having the largest annual increase and Brisbane (0.9%) the lowest.

  • The price of metal products other than steel (9.7%), ceramic products (5%) and cement products (4.5%) helped drive the overall price increase in building materials in the year to September 2009.
  • In contrast, the steel products price index decreased in annual terms (down 2%) despite significant increases prior to the September quarter. The electrical equipment index also decreased slightly over the year (down 0.5%).
