During the year ended 30 June 2012, the proportion of businesses that reported abandoning at least one type of innovative activity increased one percentage point from the previous year, to 7%. New organisational/managerial processes were the least likely to be reported as abandoned during the year ended 30 June 2012 (1%). Marketing methods was the most commonly reported type of abandoned innovative activity (4%).

Businesses with 200 or more persons employed reported the lowest proportion of abandoned innovative activity during 2011-12 (5%). The highest rate (9%) was reported by businesses with 5-19 persons employed.

By industry, the highest proportion of abandoned innovative activity was reported by businesses in Retail trade (14%), followed by Manufacturing (11%). Mining was the least likely to record abandoning innovative activity (2%).

The highest proportion of businesses that reported having abandoned the introduction or development of new goods and services during 2011-12 were in the Wholesale trade industry (6%). Businesses in Information media and telecommunications and Manufacturing were the most likely to report having abandoned new operational processes (both 4%), as well as organisational/managerial processes (both 4%). Businesses in Retail trade were the most likely to report having abandoned new marketing methods (9%).
