INTRODUCTION

This publication presents information from the June 2013 Internet Activity Survey (IAS). The IAS is conducted biannually in respect of the end of June and December in each year and collects details on aspects of internet access services provided by Internet Service Providers (ISPs) in Australia.

The survey is usually a reduced-scope collection from ISPs with more than 1,000 subscribers. However every three years for the June reference period, the IAS is a full census of all ISPs operating in Australia; this was the case for the June 2013 IAS.

Data presented in this publication includes: internet subscriber numbers by type of access connection and advertised download speed; number of ISPs; subscriber sector; volume of data downloaded; and number of mobile handset subscribers.

For comparison these data are presented on two bases:

  • For ISPs with more than 1,000 subscribers (all data items listed above)
  • For the full ISP census (limited data items: internet subscriber numbers by type of access connection and advertised download speed; number of ISPs; and subscriber sector).

Detailed data from census cycles is contained in the Internet Activity Census cycle Data Cube.

Mobile handset subscriber numbers and associated data download volumes are reported in a separate chapter. All other data reported in this release excludes mobile handsets.


DATA QUALITY

Information about data quality provided in the Explanatory Notes and Quality Declaration must be taken into consideration when interpreting the statistics in this release.


STRUCTURE OF THIS RELEASE

There are two components to this release: web based information and Data Cubes. The Data Cubes contain the detailed data that underpins the tables and commentary included in the web based information.


ROUNDING

Where figures have been rounded, discrepancies may occur between the sum of components and the total. Proportions have been calculated using rounded data.
