MAIN TYPE OF BROADBAND CONNECTION USED

Businesses using broadband were asked to specify the main type of broadband connection in use as at 30 June 2012.

Of those businesses that reported broadband as their main type of internet connection, Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) was the most commonly reported (72%). By employment size, businesses with 200 or more persons employed were the least likely to report the use of DSL (57%) but were over four times more likely to report Fibre To The Premises (FTTP) (26%) than any other employment size range.

Between 2010-11 and 2011-12, the proportion of businesses with more than 200 persons employed that reported the use of FTTP increased from 17% to 26%.

Businesses in Wholesale trade were the most likely to report DSL as their main type of broadband connection (86%), followed by Rental, hiring and real estate services (80%). The industry with the lowest proportion of businesses with DSL as the main type of broadband connection was Agriculture, forestry and fishing (39%). However, this industry recorded the greatest proportion of businesses with satellite (23%), mobile wireless (23%) and fixed wireless (15%) broadband connections as their main type of broadband connection.
