The proportion of businesses that introduced at least one type of innovation increased with each successive employment size range. Businesses with 200 or more persons employed (69%) were more than twice as likely to be innovating than businesses with 0-4 persons employed (33%).

Overall, new organisational/managerial processes was the most commonly reported type of introduced innovation (23%). This was consistent for businesses across all employment size ranges except those with 0-4 persons employed, which were more likely to report they had introduced new goods or services (17%) than any other type of innovation.

For all employment sizes other than businesses with 0-4 persons employed, organisational/managerial processes were the type of innovation most likely to be introduced. In contrast, businesses with 0-4 persons employed were most likely to introduce new goods or services.

For 2011-12, the Information media and telecommunications industry recorded the highest proportion of businesses that introduced at least one type of innovation (53%) followed by Retail trade and Wholesale trade (both 52%). The lowest proportion of introduced innovation was recorded by businesses in Transport, postal and warehousing (27%).

Retail trade had the highest proportion of businesses that recorded the introduction of new goods or services and marketing methods (34% and 32% respectively). Manufacturing recorded the highest proportion of businesses that introduced new operational processes (30%), while Rental, hiring and real estate services recorded the highest proportion of businesses that introduced new organisational/managerial processes (32%).

Agriculture, forestry and fishing recorded the lowest proportion of businesses that introduced new goods or services (5%) and marketing methods (8%). Transport, postal and warehousing services and Agriculture, forestry and fishing both recorded the lowest proportion of businesses that introduced new organisational/managerial processes, at 16%. Businesses in both Other services and Construction were least likely to report the introduction of new operational processes (13%).
