SUMMARY OF OPERATIONS

At the end of June 2007, there were 7,302 not-for-profit organisations in Australia mainly engaged in providing environment, development, housing, employment, law, philanthropic and international services. Examples of these types of organisations include employment placement and recruitment services, labour supply services, legal services, interest groups and international aid agencies.

Collectively, these organisations employed 110,482 people at the end of June 2007. Just over half (51% or 56,333 people) were employed on a permanent full-time basis. Permanent part-time employees accounted for 28.5% (31,438 people) of total employment and casuals 20.6% (22,711 people).

In addition to paid employees, there were 360,598 volunteers during the 2006-07 financial year.

Industry value added by these organisations was $3.8b.


SOURCES OF INCOME

During the 2006-07 financial year, not-for-profit environment, development, housing, employment, law, philanthropic and international organisations received $10.5b in income.

The graph below shows that the main source of income for these organisations was funding from federal, state and local government, which accounted for 35.3% ($3.7b) of total income. More than half of this funding (54.6% or $2b) was volume based, with a further 44.6% ($1.7b) received on a non-volume basis.

Donations, sponsorships and fundraising accounted for 30.3% ($3.2b) of total income and income from services 13.7% ($1.4b).

EXPENSES

During the 2006-07 financial year, not-for-profit environment, development, housing, employment, law, philanthropic and international organisations incurred $9.8b in expenses.

The graph below shows that the main expense item for these organisations was labour costs, which accounted for 37.1% ($3.6b) of total expenses.

Grants and other payments made to other organisation/businesses and individuals accounted for 26.1% ($2.6b) of total expenses and purchases 10.2% ($1b).
