NORTHERN TERRITORY

Third fastest projected household growth in Australia

The number of households in the Northern Territory is projected to increase by between 53% and 54% over the period 2006 to 2031 (from 64,400, to between 98,500 and 99,400), making the Northern Territory the third fastest growing state or territory in terms of household numbers (behind Queensland and Western Australia).

Unlike the other states and territories, the Northern Territory has more male lone person households (7,700 in 2006) than female lone person households (5,400 in 2006). Both household types are projected to increase rapidly between 2006 and 2031 (between 63% and 95% for males, and 75% to 143% for females), resulting in an increase from 13,100 lone person households in 2006 to between 22,000 and 28,100 lone person households in 2031. The number of male lone person households is projected to remain greater than the number of female lone person households.

Family households are projected to increase by 43% and 50% from 48,200 households in 2006 to between 68,600 and 72,000 in 2031. However, as a proportion of all households in the Northern Territory, family households are projected to decline from three-quarters (75%) of all Northern Territory households in 2006 to between 69% and 73% in 2031. Despite this proportional decrease, family households are projected to remain the most common household type in the Northern Territory, with lone person households accounting for around one-quarter (22% to 28%) of all households in the Northern Territory in 2031.

Average household size

Average household size in the Northern Territory in 2006 was 3.2 people per household, considerably higher than the average for Australia (2.6). Similar to all other states and territories, average household size is projected to decline in the Northern Territory, reaching between 2.9 and 3.0 people per household by 2031, still considerably higher than the projected average household size for Australia of between 2.4 and 2.5 people per household.

Families in the Northern Territory

In 2006, there were 24,000 couple families with children in the Northern Territory. This is projected to increase by up to 41% (in Series I) but projected to decrease by 1% in Series III, to reach between 23,800 and 33,900 families in 2031. Proportionally this equates to a decrease from 46% of all families in the Northern Territory in 2006 to between 32% and 44% of all families in 2031.

Couple families without children are projected to increase rapidly over the projected period, increasing by between 58% and 79%, from 16,700 families in 2006 to between 26,400 and 30,000 families in 2031. As a proportion, couple families without children are projected to increase from 32% of all families in the Northern Territory in 2006 to between 34% and 41% in 2031. In Series I and II, couple families with children are projected to remain the most common family type in the Northern Territory, while in Series III couple families
without
children are projected to overtake couple families with children in 2020.

The number of one-parent families in the Northern Territory is also projected to increase rapidly between 2006 and 2031 (by 51% to 77%), with male lone parents projected to increase by between 43% and 55%, and female lone parents projected to increase between 50% and 85%. The total number of one-parent families is projected to increase from 10,200 in 2006 (20% of all families in the Northern Territory) to between 15,500 and 18,100 families in 2031 (between 20% and 25% of all Northern Territory families).
