In 2009-10, the total Gross Value of Agricultural Production (GVAP) for Australia was $39.8 billion. The three commodities with the highest GVAP in Australia were production from meat cattle valued at $7.2 billion, cereals for grain and seed at $6.7 billion, and production from sheep and other livestock, which had a GVAP of $4.6 billion.
In the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) region, the total GVAP was $14.4 billion, which is 36% of the total GVAP for Australia. In 2009-10 the commodities with the highest GVAP in the MDB were cereals for grain and seed valued at $3 billion, production from meat cattle at $2.1 billion and production from sheep and other livestock, which had a GVAP of $2 billion.
In the states and territories, cereals for grain and seed had the highest GVAP in Western Australia ($2.3 billion), New South Wales ($1.6 billion) and South Australia ($1.1 billion). Dairy production was the commodity with highest GVAP in Victoria ($1.9 billion), which constituted 19% of Victoria's total GVAP. In Tasmania vegetables and dairy production were both highest at $233 million. These two commodities combined represented 43% of the Tasmanian total GVAP. In Queensland and the Northern Territory production from meat cattle was the highest at $3.2 billion and $285 million respectively. Finally, in the Australian Capital Territory nursery production was highest at $2.4 million.
