Utilising the tools, methods and administrative data series discussed in this paper, the ABS is part-way through preparing a historical series of experimental regional internal migration estimates. The ABS intends to release these estimates in the first half of 2012.

In future, these migration estimates could supplement the ABS series of regional population estimates. Ultimately the migration estimates could be used directly in the calculation of regional ERP.

While the data described in this paper has been prepared based on the ASGC, any future estimates would be based on the ASGS.

Results from the 2011 Census may assist in the further development of these estimates.

There is also scope to further explore historical estimates, and examine migration issues such as:

  • How far people move;
  • What types of areas do they move from or to;
  • The age and sex distribution of these movers.
