RELEASE OF AUSTRALIAN SOCIAL TRENDS, JUNE 2009 (CAT. NO. 4102.0)

Australian Social Trends June 2009 (cat. no. 4102.0) was released on 30 June 2009 and includes two feature articles about transitions in peoples living arrangements.

Relocation across the nation: internal migration and population growth. This article uses census data to examine internal migration patterns within Australia and looks at the movements of people between 2001 and 2006 to particular cities and regions which have had high rates of growth, and where internal migration has been a significant component of that growth. It also examines the characteristics of movers, such as their age, level of education attained and employment status.

Home and away: the living arrangements of young people. This article looks at transitions in the living arrangements of young people, focusing on those living with their parents and the experience of leaving the parental home. The article discusses the age at which people leave the parental home, their reasons for leaving or staying, and the likelihood of them moving back later. Other aspects of this topic covered by the article include second-generation Australians, need for assistance and caring, and time spent on domestic activities.
