This release provides the 2016 Tourism Region maps and allocation file. These are based on the 2016 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS).

The product provides maps and an allocation file for Tourism Regions for each state and the Northern Territory. Tourism Regions are defined in consultation with the relevant national and state/territory tourism organisations. Each Tourism Region is constructed from allocations of whole Statistical Area Level 2s (SA2s). SA2s are a small spatial unit of the ASGS. The allocation file provides name and code details of Tourism Regions and those SA2s from which they have been constructed.

For further information on the ASGS please refer to the ABS website at https://www.abs.gov.au/geography.

Tourism Regions are part of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS): Volume 3 - Non ABS structures. A new version of this publication was released on 13 September 2016.

Supporting material is available in the latest release for this volume which includes:

  • digital boundaries for the regions described in this publication as ESRI Shape files, MapInfo Interchange Format files, MapInfo TAB files and Open Geospatial Consortium GeoPackage
  • ABS Geospatial Web Services User Guide
  • codes, labels and hierarchies for all the regions in '.csv' format
