ENGINEERING CONSTRUCTION Table 19.13 shows in more detail the contribution of public and private sectors to engineering construction work done. The private sector increased its share of the total engineering construction work done from 54% in 2002-03 to 58% in 2003-04. Roads, highways and subdivisions accounted for 28% of the total value of engineering construction work done in 2003-04. Traditionally a public sector activity, the private sector has increased its share of construction work done of roads, highways and subdivisions to 52% in 2003-04, up from 39% in 2002-03. Total oil, gas, coal and other minerals engineering construction, a mainly private sector activity, decreased slightly to $5,385m and accounted for 20% of the total value of engineering construction work done in 2003-04.
