Total net takings from gambling increased by a quarter over the past three years to reach $13.8 billion in 2000-01, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

These total net takings were received by 6,012 businesses which provided gambling facilities in Australia. Almost two-thirds (63%) of the total net takings from gambling came from poker/gaming machines, which were mainly located in hospitality clubs ($4,238 million), pubs, taverns and bars ($3,280 million) and casinos ($1,021 million). These takings have increased by 39% since 1997-98.

Other major sources of net takings during 2000-01 included off-course TAB takings of $1,692 million, casino gaming tables of $1,464 million and lotteries, lotto style games and football pools of $1,342 million. Of the total net takings, 5% ($635 million) was received from overseas bettors.

New South Wales ($5,712 million) and Victoria ($4,216 million) accounted for almost three-quarters (72%) of the total net takings from gambling.

Based on the Australian estimated resident adult population at the end of June 2001, the $13,839 million net takings from gambling represented an expenditure of $944 per head of adult population for 2000-01. New South Wales ($1,154 per adult) and Victoria ($1,144 per adult) had the highest expenditure per head, (22% and 21% above the Australian average respectively), while South Australia ($636 per adult) and Western Australia ($427 per adult) had the lowest.

During 2000-01 the gambling taxes and levies paid to Governments totalled $4,397 million or 32% of the net takings from gambling. The largest source of gambling taxes and levies was poker/gaming machines (in premises other than casinos), which accounted for 55% of total gambling taxes and levies.

At the end of June 2001, there were 185,512 poker/gaming machines in operation, with the large majority of these located in hospitality clubs (60%) and pubs, taverns and bars (30%). During 2000-01 the average net takings per poker machine were $47,200 with the average being $37,800 in hospitality clubs and $58,900 in pubs, taverns and bars.
