TOTAL RETAIL - MONTHLY

The chart below shows the trend series and seasonally adjusted series to September 2012.

In current prices, the trend estimate for Australian turnover rose 0.2% in September 2012 following a rise of 0.3% in August 2012 and a rise of 0.3% in July 2012.

The seasonally adjusted estimate for Australian turnover rose 0.5% in September 2012 following a rise of 0.3% in August 2012 and a fall of 0.8% in July 2012.

The original estimate for Australian turnover fell 1.5% in September 2012. The original estimate for chains and other larger retailers fell 1.2% in September 2012. The original estimate for smaller retailers fell 1.9% in September 2012.

TOTAL RETAIL - QUARTERLY

In volume terms, the seasonally adjusted estimate for the September quarter 2012 fell 0.1% following a rise of 1.2% in the June quarter 2012 and a rise of 1.6 % in the March quarter 2012.

In the September quarter 2012, the seasonally adjusted estimate fell in volume terms for Department stores (-3.6%), Food retailing (-0.3%), Other retailing (-0.8%) and Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-0.4%). Household goods retailing (1.9%) and Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food retailing (0.2%) rose in seasonally adjusted terms in the September quarter 2012.

The Implicit Price Deflator for Australian turnover rose 0.7% in seasonally adjusted terms in the September quarter 2012.


TOTAL RETAIL - BY STATE

The following states and territories rose in trend terms in September 2012: Western Australia (0.6%), Queensland (0.2%), New South Wales (0.1%), Victoria (0.1%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.6%) and South Australia (0.1%). The Northern Territory (0.0%) was relatively unchanged and Tasmania (-0.5%) fell in trend terms in September 2012.

The following states and territories rose in seasonally adjusted terms in September 2012: New South Wales (0.5%), Western Australia (1.2%), Queensland (0.5%), Victoria (0.3%), South Australia (0.8%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.7%), Tasmania (0.2%) and the Northern Territory (0.2%).

In the September quarter 2012, the seasonally adjusted estimate fell in volume terms in the following states: New South Wales (-0.5%), Queensland (-0.3%), Tasmania (-2.0%), Victoria (-0.1%) and the Northern Territory (-0.7%). South Australia (0.0%) was relatively unchanged. Western Australia (1.2%) and the Australian Capital Territory (1.3%) rose in volume terms in the September quarter 2012.
