INDUSTRY TRENDS


MONTHLY SEASONALLY ADJUSTED AND TREND ESTIMATES


TOTAL RETAIL

There has been moderate trend growth for three months. Food retailing (four months), Clothing and soft good retailing (five months), Household good retailing (nine months) and Hospitality and services (11 months) have had moderate growth. Recreational good retailing (five months) and Other retailing (six months) have had strong growth, while Department stores have had three months of weak or no growth.

FOOD RETAILING

There has been moderate trend growth for four months. New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory had moderate trend growth in November 2007, while all the other states had weak growth.

DEPARTMENT STORES

After two months of weak trend growth, there was no change in the trend in November 2007. Victoria, Queensland and Western Australia had weak trend growth in November. The Australian Capital Territory had no growth, while the trend was in decline in New South Wales.

CLOTHING AND SOFT GOOD RETAILING

There have been five months of moderate trend growth following four months of strong growth. Victoria (17 months), Western Australia (five months) and Tasmania (three months) have had strong growth. New South Wales has had moderate growth for seven months, while Queensland has had a decline in the trend estimate for five months.

HOUSEHOLD GOOD RETAILING

There has been moderate trend growth for nine months. The Northern Territory has had strong growth for 13 months. After four months of strong growth, New South Wales had moderate growth in November 2007. Victoria (two months), South Australia (five months), Western Australia (two months) and Tasmania (four months) have had weak or no growth. The Australian Capital Territory has been in decline for 12 months.

RECREATIONAL GOOD RETAILING

There has been strong trend growth for five months. New South Wales (five months), Victoria (five months), Queensland (five months), Western Australia (six months) and the Australian Capital Territory (three months) have had strong growth, while South Australia and Tasmania have had a decline for at least five months.

OTHER RETAILING

There have been six months of strong trend growth. New South Wales (eight months), Victoria (five months), Queensland (nine months) and South Australia (six months) have had strong trend growth.

TOTAL RETAIL (EXCLUDING HOSPITALITY AND SERVICES)

Over the last six months the trend growth for Total retail (excluding Hospitality and services) has been slightly stronger than Total industries (including Hospitality and services).

HOSPITALITY AND SERVICES

There has been moderate trend growth for 11 months. Victoria (three months) and South Australia (nine months) have had strong growth. New South Wales has had moderate trend growth for four months.
