TOTAL RETAIL - MONTHLY

The chart below shows the trend series and seasonally adjusted series to March 2013.

In current prices, the trend estimate for Australian turnover rose 0.4% in March 2013 following a rise of 0.4% in February 2013 and a rise of 0.4% in January 2013.

The seasonally adjusted estimate for Australian turnover fell 0.4% in March 2013 following a rise of 1.3% in February 2013 and a rise of 1.3% in January 2013.

The original estimate for Australian turnover rose 10.9% in March 2013. The original estimate for chains and other larger retailers rose 13.1% in March 2013. The original estimate for smaller retailers rose 7.2% in March 2013.

TOTAL RETAIL - QUARTERLY

In volume terms, the seasonally adjusted estimate for the March quarter 2013 rose 2.2% following a rise of 0.1% in the December quarter 2012 and a fall of 0.1% in the September quarter 2012.

In the March quarter 2013, the seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms for Food retailing (2.0%), Household goods retailing (3.7%), Other retailing (3.0%), Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (2.6%), Department stores (1.9%) and Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food retailing (0.8%) in seasonally adjusted terms in the March quarter 2013.

The Implicit Price Deflator for Australian turnover fell 0.6% in seasonally adjusted terms in the March quarter 2013.


TOTAL RETAIL - BY STATE

The following states and territories rose in trend terms in March 2013: New South Wales (0.5%), Queensland (0.6%), Victoria (0.4%), Western Australia (0.2%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.7%), Tasmania (0.5%) and the Northern Territory (0.2%). South Australia was relatively unchanged (0.0%) in trend terms in March 2013.

The following states and territories fell in seasonally adjusted terms in March 2013: Queensland (-0.8%), Victoria (-0.6%), New South Wales (-0.2%) and the Australian Capital Territory (-0.8%). Tasmania was relatively unchanged (0.0%). Western Australia (0.2%), South Australia (0.3%) and the Northern Territory (0.8%) rose in seasonally adjusted terms in March 2013.

In the March quarter 2013, the seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms in the following states: New South Wales (2.6%), Victoria (2.6%), Queensland (2.7%), Western Australia (0.7%), the Australian Capital Territory (3.5%), Tasmania (3.2%), South Australia (0.6%) and the Northern Territory (1.0%).
