TOTAL RETAIL - MONTHLY

The chart below shows the trend series and seasonally adjusted series to March 2010.

In current price trend terms, Australian turnover remained unchanged in each of March and February 2010 following an increase of 0.1% in January 2010.

Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.4%) and Department stores (0.3%) have had an increase in the trend for at least fourteen months. Other retailing (0.3%) had an increase for the fifth consecutive month in March 2010. Household goods retailing (-0.3%) and Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-0.2%) have both decreased for the third consecutive month and Food retailing (-0.1%) decreased for the second consecutive month in March 2010.

The following states and territories have had an increase in the trend estimate for at least nine months: the Northern Territory (0.6%), Western Australia (0.5%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.4%), Victoria (0.1%) and South Australia (0.1%). New South Wales (-0.2%), Tasmania (-0.1%) and Queensland (-0.1%) all decreased in March 2010.

In current price seasonally adjusted terms, Australian turnover increased by 0.3% in March 2010 following a decrease of 1.2% in February 2010 and and increase of 0.9% in January 2010.

In current price original terms, chains and other large retailers increased 12.6% in March 2010. The estimate for smaller retailers increased 10.5% in March 2010.

TOTAL RETAIL - QUARTERLY

In seasonally adjusted terms, the March quarter 2010 had a 0.1% increase in volume and a 0.2% increase in prices.

In the March quarter 2010, Department stores (3.0%), Other retailing (1.1%) and Clothing, footwear and other personal accessory retailing (0.9%) increased in seasonally adjusted volume terms. Food retailing (-0.7%), Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (-0.4%) and Household good retailing (-0.2%) decreased in seasonally adjusted volume terms.

Western Australia (1.7%), the Australian Capital Territory (1.4%), South Australia (1.2%), the Northern Territory (1.0%) and Victoria (0.5%) increased in seasonally adjusted volumes terms. Tasmania (-1.0%), New South Wales (-0.8%) and Queensland (-0.6%) decreased in seasonally adjusted volume terms in the March quarter 2010.
