INTRODUCTION
This publication presents information from the 2012-13 Business Characteristics Survey (BCS). The BCS is conducted annually and collects detailed information relating to: use of information technology (IT); innovation; and a broad range of other non-financial characteristics.

The data presented in this publication includes key measures of innovation by type and status, as well as business practices related to innovation including: barriers; drivers; sources of ideas and information; collaboration; intellectual property protection methods; novelty; financial indicators; and benefits.

STRUCTURE OF THIS RELEASE
There are two components to this release: web based information; and data cubes. The data cubes contain detailed data that underpins the tables, graphs and commentary included in the web based information.

Included in this release is information on the Medical devices industry, as outlined in Appendix 1, and expenditure on innovation, as outlined in Appendix 2.

FUTURE RELEASE FROM THE 2012-13 BCS
Core detailed and final estimates from the BCS will be released in Selected Characteristics of Australian Business (cat. no. 8167.0) on 18 September 2014. Some of these data will be cross-classified by innovation status, providing differences in characteristics for innovation-active and non innovation-active businesses.
